ABOUT US

In 1932, a small fish market on the San Pedro wharf began contracting with local fishermen for their daily catch. Three enterprising brothers, Jack, Frank and Sam DeLuca, sold fresh seafood caught in Southern California waters to the wholesalers in Los Angeles, Monterey and San Francisco. State Fish Company was born.
The beginning was modest—small catches, limited facilities, long hours and hard work.
In 1946, Sam DeLuca, the youngest of the three brothers, took over the company’s leadership.  As seafood developed into an increasingly important food source, the company grew and added more boats to its fleet and developed the squid, mackerel, sardines, anchovies and bonito fishery in California, cultivating an industry that  attracted worldwide attention and popularity.

From 1960 to 1985, State Fish Company acquired 90,000 square feet of cold storage facilities to blast freeze and hold millions of pounds of fish.  These facilities enabled the company to process larger quantities of fresh and frozen production, and grow to an international import/export business--sourcing products globally and bringing them into the Port of Los Angeles.

And we’ve continued to grow by seeking and finding new opportunities.  As seafood has gained momentum among retailers, chain restaurants, supermarkets, club stores and food service, we developed a full line of frozen seafood under the Fiesta del Mar, Nautilus and Atlantis labels. We also expanded to value added services such as portion control, pre-pricing, custom packaging, USDC inspections, private labeling and distribution.
In the late 90s, we created a "case-in-case-out" division  known as Sea Catch so that we could service  ethnic markets.  Today, our company is a fully integrated operation from the ocean to the consumer.

Seventy-five years of experience and knowledge in handling several seafood species, has made State Fish a unique company, though at our core we’re still a family operation.  Each day at 11:30 a.m. our management and sales personnel meet in  the company dining room to discuss market conditions, new ideas, improving customer satisfaction, and trends. Sam’s founding belief in  building  strong relationships with our customers has inspired trust and confidence in the State Fish name, which we continued to foster to this day. They represent the culmination of a lifetime dedicated to building a solid company built on a tradition of respecting vendors, customers and employees, and a love of the sea.

Fish is our world.

The DeLuca family.
